Growing Forward includes biosecurity because it is the key to preventing disease in livestock and crops.  Biosecurity creates barriers that protect susceptible populations from disease-causing agents such as bacteria and viruses.  Growing Forward funds will help implement programs that keep our valuable agricultural commodities protected from disease.

The Ministry will provide resources to assist in developing biosecurity guidelines that can benefit Saskatchewan cow/calf and feedlot operations.  These voluntary guidelines are based on a foundation of awareness and education about what actions pose a risk to a herd and what simple steps can be taken to reduce that risk.

The Growing Forward initiative will also help implement biosecurity programs for industries that already have a National Voluntary Standard.  For example, standards have been developed for the poultry industry because of the risks posed by diseases such as avian influenza.

New Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture biosecurity programs will help livestock producers learn more about best management practices, work with them to assess risks on their farm and plan steps they can take to reduce disease in their flocks and herds.
