Programs and Services Horned Cattle FundLast Update: December 2012
Purpose: Deductions under The Horned Cattle Purchases Act are a "penalty" in order to encourage dehorning of livestock. The money collected is used for research and development in the cattle industry.
Background: The Horned Cattle Fund was established in 1940 as part of The Horned Cattle Purchases Act to encourage producers to dehorn cattle in order to reduce injuries and bruising during transportation and marketing. The horned deduction is $2 per animal. On average, the Horned Cattle Fund collects $45,000 per year in deductions. The Fund is distributed on recommendations of the Horned Cattle Purchases Act Advisory Committee.
Impact: Over the past 10 years, the Horned Cattle Fund has contributed more than $860,000 toward research activities and projects for the betterment of the livestock industry in the province.
