Irrigation has been used as a tool to diversify the rural economy and to stabilize crop production in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan offers a unique combination of low cost production, extensive land base (651,900 km2 -almost the size of Texas), low-cost feed and hay crops, plenty of water and expanding global market opportunities. In 2003, total value of Saskatchewan livestock exports was $110 M. Livestock raised in Saskatchewan include cattle, pigs, llama, ostrich, elk, deer, and bison.
