Relative yield data for the tables in this document have been supplied by the Western Forage Testing Program and the Saskatchewan Forage Council's Variety Testing Program, with support from the Agriculture Development Fund, the Irrigation Based Economic Development/Partnership Agreement on Water Based Economic Development and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

In the alfalfa characteristic table, disease resistance ratings are as follows: 1. crown rot; 2. winter crown rot; 3. downy mildew, 4. verticillium wilt; 5. bacterial wilt. Fall dormancy is a numeric rating of the onset of senescence of alfalfa in the fall. Hardy varieties enter dormancy early, and are rated a "one" on the fall dormancy scale. Non-hardy varieties remain green late into the fall, and are rated a a "nine". Varieties with a fall dormancy rating of five or greater may not be adapted to Saskatchewan growing conditions.
