Crops Honey Factsheet![]() Updated: December 2007 Saskatchewan produces some of the highest quality honey in the world. Our northern location and long, warm summer days, and our skilled beekeepers, help to produce more honey per hive than any other province in Canada. There has never been a sweeter time to share in the opportunity. Saskatchewan has abundant fields of canola, alfalfa, sweet clover and borage, providing a bounty of flowering crops for honeybees. The product is a mild-flavoured, white table honey enjoyed around the world. ![]() Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba produce over 80% of Canadian honey. Honey production in Saskatchewan is concentrated in the east-central region of the province. The province has over 1,100 beekeepers who tend 100,000 colonies. The value of honey production is about $27 million annually. In 2006, 25 million pounds of honey were produced in Saskatchewan, accounting for 23% of all honey produced in Canada. Saskatchewan bees produce an average of 193 pounds of honey per colony, with some operations averaging well over 200 pounds per colony. The majority of the honey produced here is exported to the United States and Europe. Honey and honey products produced in Saskatchewan have a variety of uses. In addition to being a wonderful food and food ingredient, it is also added to medicine and food supplements. Honey by-products, pollen, beeswax and royal jelly, offer additional spinoff opportunities. Saskatchewan Agriculture registers beekeepers, and is responsible for bee health and managing industry practices. The quality and safety of Saskatchewan honey is second to none.
