Contact: Provincial Manager Field Services Livestock Brand Registration Purpose - To protect producer ownership rights through registration of acceptable livestock brands. Upon request from a producer, a livestock brand is registered according to The Brand Regulations established under The Animal Identification Act. When a brand is registered, it is in effect for four years or for a lifetime. Brands can be renewed, transferred to other owners or cancelled. Brands which are not renewed are kept on an inactive file for five years before they are eligible for reissue. The current cost for registering a brand for four years is $25.00 or $200 for a personal lifetime brand. A corporate lifetime brand is available for twenty years at a cost of $200. Proof of ownership of livestock is required prior to marketing animals. Applying a unique mark registered to one owner is the simplest form of permanently identifying animals. There are approximately 19,000 registered brands in Saskatchewan. Almost 70 per cent of the livestock producers in Saskatchewan brand their animals.
