The week ending January 11, 2008, saw the majority of Saskatchewan auction marts resuming sales after the holiday break. Light volumes were reported, with 9,832 head of cattle being traded, on par with the pre-holiday level. Reports by Canfax members indicate prices are lower than before the holiday in all weight classes of steers and heifers. Steers ranged between $1 and $6 per cwt. lower last week, while heifers were down between $4 and $9 per cwt. The Saskatchewan/Nebraska basis was $7.40 for the week. Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices ended lower than this time a year ago in all classes of steers and heifers, down between $11 and $25 per cwt. Lighter weight heifers were hit the hardest, down $25 per cwt. Light weight steers were $14 per cwt. lower. Heavier cattle were down between $11 and $13 in both the steer and heifer markets. Western Canada's fed cattle market was trading slightly higher this week, as fed steers experienced a price increase of $0.50 per cwt. Fed cattle exports to the United States were 9,813 head, on par with last week's export levels. D1,2 cows recorded an average price for slaughter cows of $31.49 per cwt.
