The sales volume at Saskatchewan auction marts improved again, as stronger trading was reported this week.  Sales were reported at 19,107 head, up from 15,333 head the previous week.  Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were mixed in both the steer and heifer markets, as prices improved in the lighter weight animals but were down or unchanged for heavier weight classes.  Light weight steers (300-400 lb.) reported gains of $4 per cwt., while steers 400-500 lb. traded $1 per cwt. higher.  Steers 500-600 lb. were unchanged last week.  Steers 600-700 lb. experienced a price increase of $1 per cwt., while 700-800 lb. steers traded down $1 per cwt.  Eight hundred to 900 lb. steers were unchanged.  Heavy steers (900+ lb.) reported a slightly lower price, trading down $1 per cwt.  Light weight heifers (300-400 lb.) were up $2 per cwt.  Heifers 400-500 lb. were the biggest gainers this week, trading up $5 per cwt.  Heifers 500-600 lb. traded up $2 per cwt. for the second consecutive week.  Heifers 600-800 lb. and heavy heifers (800+) were all unchanged.  The average cash price of feed barley in the par region (delivery within 100 miles of Saskatoon) was approximately $187 per tonne, down from last week's average of $190 per tonne.  The Lethbridge cash price was between $205 -$215/tonne.  The Canadian dollar was relatively unchanged this week at US$1.00 from US$0.9979.  The Saskatchewan/Nebraska basis this week was $7.42 per cwt.

Fed Cattle & Slaughter Cows

Western Canada's fed cattle market was slightly higher last week, as Saskatchewan steers were up $1.25 per cwt.  Fed cattle exports to the United States were marginally lower, as 18,807 head moved south compared to 19,898 head the week previous.  D1,2 cows recorded an average price for slaughter cows of $37.79 per cwt., up from $35.46 per cwt. the week previous.
