Saskatchewan auction marts' volume of cattle remained strong again this week, with 22,008 head of cattle entering the ring, down slightly from the previous week's 23,868 head.  Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were slightly lower or unchanged in both the steer and heifer markets.  Light weight steers (300-400 lb.) traded lower this week, down $1 per cwt.  Steers 400-700 lb. were unchanged.  Steers 700-800 lb. reported a slight loss, down $1 per cwt. for the second straight week.  Eight hundred to 900 lb. steers and heavy steers (900+ lb.) reported no change in price.  Light weight heifers (300-400 lb.) dropped sharply this week, down $6 per cwt.  Heifers 400-500 lb. traded down $2 per cwt., while heifers 500-600 lb. showed marginal losses, decreasing $1 per cwt.  Heifers 600-700 lb. were unchanged.  Heifers 700-800 reported a decrease of $3 per cwt., while heavy heifers (800+) were down $1 per cwt.  Cash barley prices were higher this week, with the average cash price of feed barley for Lethbridge delivery being approximately $216 per tonne, while delivery to the par region (Saskatoon delivery) was approximately $185 per tonne.  The Canadian dollar was relatively unchanged this week at US$1.01 from US$1.016.  The Saskatchewan/Nebraska basis improved to $5.62 from $8.01 per cwt.

In Western Canada, the fed cattle market was lower last week.  In Alberta, fed cattle prices fell $0.50 per cwt. for steers and $1.00 per cwt. for heifers.  In Saskatchewan, however, fed cattle were up $1.00 per cwt. in both the fed steer and heifer markets.  According to the USDA, there were 18,048 fed cattle exports to the United States, down from 19,452 the week previous.  D1,2 cows recorded an average price for slaughter cows of $44.39 per cwt., up from $41.01 per cwt. the week previous.
