Feeder cattle trade was down this week across Western Canada.  Saskatchewan auction marts' volume of cattle was 15,736 head, down approximately 25 per cent from the previous week's 21,208 head.  Saskatchewan feeder cattle prices were mixed in both the steer and heifer markets.  Light weight steers (300-400 lb.) traded lower again this week, down $2 per cwt.  Steers 400-500 lb. were slightly lower, down $1 per cwt.  Steers 500-600 lb. were unchanged.  Six hundred to 700 lb. steers traded marginally higher, up $1 per cwt.  Steers 700-800 lb. were unchanged for the week.  Steers 800-900 lb. traded higher this week, up $1 per cwt.  Heavy steers (900+ lb.) traded down $1 per cwt.  Light weight heifers (300-400 lb.) and 400-500 lb. heifers were marginally lower, decreasing $1 per cwt.  Heifers 500-600 lb. were par with last week.  Heifers 600-700 lb. traded higher, up $1 per cwt.  Heifers 700-800 lb. were down $1 per cwt., while heavy heifers (800+ lb.) saw a slight increase, up $1 per cwt.  Cash barley prices were higher on average.  The average cash price of feed barley for Lethbridge delivery rose $10 per tonne to roughly $234 per tonne, while delivery to the par region (Saskatoon delivery) was approximately $200 per tonne.  The Canadian dollar traded at an average of US$0.9833 this week, relatively unchanged from last week's US$0.9824.  The Canfax projected Alberta feeder steer basis (850 lb.) for the nearby April contract is -16.63.

Fed Cattle & Slaughter Cows

In Western Canada, the fed cattle market was marginally higher.  Alberta fed cattle prices increased $0.65 per cwt. for steers, while heifers saw a price rise of $1 per cwt.  Saskatchewan reported an increase for fed steers of $0.25 per cwt.  Sales volumes of fed cattle were 20,000 head, up significantly from approximately 12,000 head.  According to the USDA, 15,012 fed cattle were exported to the United States, down slightly from last week's exports of 16,155 head.  D1,2 cows recorded an average price for slaughter cows of $44.92 per cwt., up $1 per cwt. from $43.55 per cwt. the week previous.  The Saskatchewan/Nebraska cash basis for fed cattle weakened to $-7.92 from $-5.38 per cwt.
